HBO is one of the largest pay television network in the US under the parent company WarnerMedia. In early June 2018, AT&T purchased Times Warner Inc. as it’s subsidiary and renamed the parent company WarnerMedia.
With the purchase, John Stankey, long time AT&T executive, the new CEO of WarnerMedia talked on an earnings call on Tuesday about AT&T’s intentions to invest more in HBO’s programming.
This is not the first time Stankey has talked about increasing investments. In the recent leaked town hall’s meeting audio, Stankey states that the recent HBO model was not profitable enough and the network needs to produce more content.
HBO Casey Bloys New Projects?
HBO’s programming president Casey Bloys agrees Stankey’s assessment that they have been aware of the need for more programming. But there has been no investment in the past. Bloys comment that the news of investment is “music to the ears”.
HBO Casey Bloys further goes to clarify,
“There are no plans to dilute the HBO brand in favor of increasing volume of programming.”
HBO Casey Bloys agrees that they are capable of doing more programming. The new investment will new opportunities. But he also assures that they won’t lose the quality of their programming.
The year 2018 is going to be different for HBO since under new management there are bound to be some changes. Stankey so far comments “a tough year” and “lots of work to alter and change direction.” To which Bloys responds,
“We are not going to do anything that doesn’t feel like something we wouldn’t have done before; no one is asking us to sacrifice quality for volume.”
On Tuesday, Stankey said Plepler and his team has scoped out “very high profile projects” which they already have rights for. When asked to Bloys, he refuses to elaborate on what these projects or its genre might be.
With HBO bidding one of its biggest series ‘Game of Thrones’ farewell when asked about the timing of investment, Bloys replied:
“Anytime is a good time to invest in programming.”
He continues
“There is no next Sopronos or next Game of Thrones, there are next great series.”
HBO Casey Bloys returned to the increased volume topic and added,
“we can do more but not lose the quality with the increased funding.”
