Sam Docherty was raised on Phillip Island and he supported the Carlton Football Club. Docherty learned the game from the Phillip Island Auskick program. He spent his whole junior football career with the Phillip Island Bulldogs in the Alberton Football Netball League, making his senior debut at the age of 15 in 2009 alongside his older brother Josh.
Recently, CARLTON’S stunning one-point victory over Brisbane on Friday night was marred by an anterior cruciate ligament injury to much-loved player Sam Docherty. Docherty departed the field after a tackle in the first quarter of the Blues’ Opening Round match, with scans later indicating an ACL and meniscus tear. Sam has formed a friendship with Ben Cunnington, a fellow cancer survivor from North Melbourne, and his wife Belinda. Sam discussed his battle with cancer in an Instagram post from October 2021. At the age of 27, he was compelled to undergo treatment for a fatal tumor.
Docherty has utilized his platform to raise awareness and funding for cancer research, having overcome testicular cancer twice. Docherty received the Jim Stynes Community Leadership Award and $20,000 to a charity of his choice for his efforts to raise cash for cancer research and support children’s organizations.
