Valentine claimed that the first indicator of a problem was trouble swallowing; later, in December, he “choked and retched” while eating a massaman curry, prompting a gastroscopy.
A four-centimeter tumor was discovered near the base of his esophagus. Valentine worked while receiving chemotherapy and radiation treatment, but he will now have surgery to remove his esophagus and will need three months off to recover.
