What happened on the day of Kai Eardley’s death?
On the day of his death, at morning, Kai Eardley and his mother had an appointment with a new psychiatrist. His mother said,
“I think he should’ve been admitted but he insisted he was fine, he didn’t want to go to a clinic. So, at 10.30am he dropped me off at work. I believe he probably died around midday.”
During hindsight, his mother suspects that Eardley had already made up his mind to take his life days or weeks earlier.
Around 5.30, his family noticed that he didn’t arrive home and he wasn’t at his girlfriend’s house either. His mother said,
“We found his clothing at about 6pm and called the police. The water police came out, there was a bit of a land search … the next morning we were out looking for him again.”
When the sun rose after a few hours, Eardley’s body was found dead in July 2016.

Kai Eardley worked hard with the pressure he felt to achieve through Year 12 while there was a bit of anxiety. Kai Eardley mother recalled,
“Midway through the first year of his uni studies, he started to have panic attacks about what was coming up and the pressure associated with exams.”
After the emerging cracks, his parents took him to a GP to get a mental health plan. But at its worst, Eardley developed severe insomnia, socially isolated, no communication, avoiding family, and preferring to stay indoors.

“As parents of three boys, there were lots of busy times with outdoor activities — fishing, snorkelling, surfing, sport … they were always on the go and there was never a dull moment.”
