Mimi was born in Hong Kong and relocated to Sydney when she was one, but she returned to Hong Kong at the age of eleven to live with her loving grandmother, Ah Por, for seven years after her parents divorced. She and her brother Jonathan were reared in impoverished Hong Kong public housing, with her grandmother imparting to them the values of nurturing, cooking, and caring.
Their small abode was full of love and tradition, with the aroma of poached fish, soy-braised chicken, or coconut and red date syrup on the stove. Mimi’s motivation stems from her formative experiences of serving as her grandmother’s sous cook during the Chinese New Year.
