Tim Peel, one of the NHL’s most controversial officials, has retired from refereeing games at the NHL level. This was revealed early Wednesday morning, just hours after Peel was caught on camera admitting to giving a fake penalty while working a game.

Why Is Tim Peel Banned?

Tim Peel’s reason for punishing Nashville against no provocation is unclear, but “game management” and officials’ make-up calls are nothing new in the NHL. Mr. Peel’s revelation earned him such a bad reputation that the NHL declared he would “no longer be working NHL games now or in the future.”

Colin Campbell, the NHL’s Senior Executive Vice President of Hockey Operations, said in a statement released Wednesday. He said, 

Nothing is more important than ensuring the integrity of our game,

NHL referee Tim Peel was already planning to retire from officiating at the end of this season, but his retirement just pushes his exit a month forward.
