After a short stint at Dedza Secondary School, he taught for two years at Robert Blake Secondary School in the central region’s Dowa area. In 1960, Tembo was invited to run for a parliamentary seat in the Dedza South constituency, two years after Dr. Banda’s arrival in Malawi to lead the fight for independence from British colonial rule. Three years before Malawi gained independence and became the Republic of Malawi, Tembo was elected to the country’s legislative assembly in 1961.

Following independence, he assumed the role of Malawi’s second finance minister, succeeding Henry Phillips (later Sir Henry Phillips). Dunduzu Chisiza had been the initial choice for the position, but tragically, he lost his life in a car accident in 1962. During the well-known Cabinet Crisis of 1964, when most of the President’s closest advisors faced opposition to his plans and resigned, John Tembo stood as the only cabinet member who did not step down.
