She was born to parents- Ralph S. McGregor and Beatrice E. Willard. When Katherine was just a child, her mother Beatrice moved the family to Fort Collins, Colorado. There she spent most of her early life.
With a major in drama, Katherine graduated from Northwestern University eventually moving into New York City in 1949. She studied acting under Sanford Meisner, Stella Adler, and N. Richard Nash.
