On November 3, 1984, the then-17-year-old Lisa McVey left home to work a double shift at a doughnut store before leaving a suicidal note.

While returning home on her bike, a man knocks her off her bike eventually abducting her. McVey recalled,

“I always took the same route home. I felt the cold steel of a gun on my left temple,”

“A man dragged me across the street. I couldn’t see his face, but he got me to his car… he threw me in the driver’s side.”

The man, Bobby Joe Long, blindfolds and ties her up, taking her to his apartment where she remained as the hostage at gunpoint for 26 hours. Meanwhile, she was collecting information to help the police if she made it out alive.

She said,

 “I had street smarts and I did everything I could to remember every detail of where I was and what happened.”

To escape from there, she lied about becoming his girlfriend and making up stories to gain the captor’s sympathy. Her plan works and the captor releases her.
