Losing weight, in theory, is pretty easy. Eat less, move more blah blah. What’s really fucking hard is everyday life. Every single thing we do revolves around food. Hangout with friends..drink and eat. Funeral, wedding, graduation, baby shower…eat and drink. We’re bombarded with food advertisements all day long. Stress and lack of sleep can makes it even harder to stay on track. And just when you’re trying to do good, someone walks in with doughnuts, (my husband 🙄). It’s never ending! So, here’s a few things I tell my clients when they’re first starting out. 1. Track your calories. Log everything you eat for at least a full week. This information is valuable to determine a starting point. 2. Focus on whole plant based FIBER rich foods (fiber is extremely important). Stop hyper-focusing on protein. If your food consists mostly of whole plant based foods (vegetables, fruit, whole grains, beans, lentils, legumes, nuts, seeds), and eating the appropriate amount of calories per day, you’re going to get plenty of amino acids and protein. FIBER is a micronutrient that our bodies need. It strengthens your immune system, builds healthy gut bacteria, stabilizes blood sugar, eliminates waste and toxins and helps keep you fuller longer! 3. Get 10,000 steps per day, minimum. Energy expenditure is a little harder to calculate than calories (energy) in. 10k steps gives us a base to work off of and helps us determine how “active” you truly are throughout the day. 4. Be aware of sneaky calories and unnecessary fat in the diet from oils (salad dressings, cooking oils, butter, mayo). Just 1tbs of oil has 120 calories and around 14g fat. You could have 2 pieces of fruit or 1/2 cup of beans for the same amount. Oils are useless in the diet. 5. Hydrate. It’s crazy to think, but there are so many people walking around dehydrated. It can cause fatigue, digestion issues, headaches. A good rule of thumb is to drink 1/2 your body weight in ounces of water. Increase this when you’re working out or if you’re sweating a lot throughout the day. Most importantly, be consistent, flexible and patient. They’ll be ups and downs but keep moving forward!
