‘The Voice’ contestant Sheldon Riley received approval after the blind audition. Later on, he revealed that a student who bullied him in high school for being gay came out to him.
While growing up on the Gold Coast, Riley faced bullying and depression regarding his sexuality. He told the publication,
“Anything you can imagine, that’s what happened to me. I didn’t have it easy. I’d completely shut down from the world.”
It all changed when one of his bullies thanked him for coming out and admitted that Riley’s courage caused his own coming out as gay.
Riley said,
‘It wasn’t until one day when this one kid messaged me: ‘Hey I go to your school, I don’t want to let you know who I am, but I’m so afraid to come out and thank you so much, you’ve made me want to take that first step,’
He continued,
it turned out it was actually the guy who bullied me.’
With the hope of inspiring others just like his coach and idol Boy George, he said,
“I just thought if I can inspire the person who shut me down for so long then my power is endless in this,” “If I can set a standard really high – that’s why I wear really crazy outfits – anyone else can feel confident just putting on nail polish.”
