Sofia Sapega was flying to Vilnius with her boyfriend Roman Protasevich after vacationing in Greece to defend her Master’s thesis, according to a statement from European a Humanities University.
After his flight was forced to land in Belarus on Sunday, Belarusian blogger Roman Protasevich was not the only one detained. Sofia, who was on the flight with her boyfriend Roman, was detained by the Belarusian government alongside him.
Sapega’s detention and arrest were surprising, considering that she was only accompanying Protasevich and was on her way to defend her Master’s thesis at her university.
Her university has said it would provide her with immediate consular assistance and has appealed to the international community and human rights activists to help her get released. On Monday, Belarusian authorities released a video of Protasevich in which he is heard saying that he is cooperating with authorities. But little is known about Sapega, including where she is being kept.
