Australian Securities and Investment Commission (ASIC) chairman James Shipton had to go through the analysis of ASIC’s connection with banks.
In his interim report, Kenneth Hayne conveyed a scathing assessment of the regulator. And from this moment onwards, the banking royal commission didn’t go easy on ASIC. While facing the inquiry in Sydney, the chairman has some strong questions to answer.
On regulator’s cooperation with the prime banks, the chairman started with a strident defense. Most of them criticized it as too cozy.
Apart from having a relationship with the banks, James Shipton opposed any trade-off. Rowena Orr QC’s assistance, senior counsel asked;
“It’s part of human nature, isn’t it, Mr. Shipton, that when we have a relationship with someone, it’s usually harder for us to do something that might harm that person’s interests?”
Shipton said that he is focusing on ‘the importance of having a professional relationship.’ He responded:
“as I emphasized earlier, exercising the highest degree of professional judgment in relation to these interactions.”
