The reason why police shot her was that Vanessa herself firstly brandished a gun at the officers. Nonetheless, the gun she used was a fake one; Lt Joe Mendoza of the Los Angeles County sheriff’s department later said to the reporters,

“It looked like a real gun and it was unclear where the gun was during her lengthy interaction with police.”

The police officers did have body cameras installed in them however the actual footage won’t be released until six months of investigation.
